Accusations of opacity against the Venezuelan government regarding political prisoners and victims of the earthquake

The situation of political prisoners and the management of the victims of the double earthquake of 24 June reignite accusations of opacity against Delcy Rodríguez's interim government. The families of the prisoners have denounced arbitrary transfers from the Rodeo I prison, which took place without informing relatives and lawyers, also speaking of "forced disappearances". The complaint was collected by Dinorah Figuera, head of the opposition delegation engaged in negotiations with Chavismo, who expressed "concern" and said she was available to meet the family members.

On the earthquake front, the NGO Provea accuses the government of not updating the death toll for over a week.

The latest official data speaks of 6,509 deaths, while there has been no update for the missing for over 69 days. The governor of La Guaira, José Alejandro Terán, had indicated on August 4 the number of missing people at 1,579, based on data provided by families. Provea also reports that the government has reduced previous bulletins, eliminating information on injured, displaced people and damaged structures.

Meanwhile, Venevisión also broke the silence, asking for conditions and an electoral calendar. “A political transition cannot become a waiting room without a date,” the private TV channel said in an editorial.
