Adam Glapiński got a raise. How much will the president of the National Bank of Poland earn?
The essence of the changes is to increase the monthly bonus payable to the President of the NBP. According to the new rules, its amount increases from 130 to 150 percent. remuneration. In practice, this means about 5 thousand. PLN more per month. Adam Glapiński's total remuneration increases by nearly 9%.
Formally, the draft resolution was prepared by the director of the NBP Personnel Department. The president of the central bank, as chairman of the management board, accepted the submitted proposal. The new rules came into force on October 1, so the increase is effective this month.
Why does a bonus increase increase earnings so much?
The remuneration system for the president of the NBP is unusual. The basic part of his salary is related to the regulations regarding the so-called "erki", i.e. a group of the most important people in the state, whose remuneration is specified in the regulations.
The President of the NBP receives remuneration at a level related to, among others, salaries: the Speakers of the Sejm and Senate and the Prime Minister. In his case, the basis is a multiple of the base amount as well as a functional allowance and a long-service allowance.
But that's not all. Separate regulations in force at the NBP provide for an additional monthly bonus. So far, it has been 130 percent. remuneration resulting from the regulations. After the change, it is 150 percent. As a result, the current monthly remuneration of the President of the NBP amounts to approximately PLN 59,000. PLN gross.
In addition, there are quarterly prizes
The system doesn't end there. The President of the NBP also receives quarterly bonuses ranging from the equivalent of three months' remuneration in the first quarter to 4.5 months' remuneration in the fourth quarter. As a result, the annual earnings of the president of the central bank exceed PLN 1.5 million.
In 2025, Adam Glapiński was supposed to earn approximately PLN 1.591 million. According to calculations taking into account this year's changes, his earnings this year may amount to approximately PLN 1.64 million. An even bigger difference will appear next year.
Nearly 200 thousand PLN more per year
From January 1, 2027, the remuneration of people covered by the "erki" system will increase by an additional 3%. This means that the increase in the remuneration of the President of the NBP will consist of two elements: the October change in the amount of the bonus and next year's increase related to the base amount.
According to WP calculations, in 2027 Adam Glapiński may earn a total of over PLN 1.8 million. This would mean approximately 200,000. PLN more than in 2026.
Increases also for the authorities of the NBP and the Monetary Policy Council
The change does not only concern the president of the NBP. The resolution also provides for higher remuneration for the first deputy president and vice president of NBP.
The first position is currently vacant. In turn, the term of office of vice-president Adam Lipiński ends in November.
Changes in the remuneration system also affect the earnings of members of the Monetary Policy Council. However, their increases will be smaller than in the case of the president of the NBP.
NIK has previously paid attention to the principles of remuneration
The remuneration system at NBP has been controversial for years. The Supreme Audit Office drew attention to the opacity of the rules for determining the remuneration of the president of the central bank.
In defense of high salaries, the importance of the position and comparisons with the remuneration of heads of other central banks were pointed out. Adam Glapiński earns less than the president of the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, but his remuneration is higher than the remuneration of the head of the US Federal Reserve.
What about the State Tribunal for Glapiński?
The timing of salary changes is also special for political reasons. Adam Glapiński remains at the center of the dispute regarding the future of the management of the National Bank of Poland.
On Tuesday, October 6, the Sejm Committee on Constitutional Responsibility assesses the collected evidence regarding the motion to hold the President of the NBP constitutionally liable before the State Tribunal. The Commission is also dealing with its draft report.
Over 50 witnesses have already been interviewed in the case. The Commission is expected to finalize work on the report in the coming days. One of the elements of the debate regarding the President of the NBP are also the principles of granting him remuneration, bonuses and awards.
Meanwhile, the increase in the remuneration of the central bank management is already in force.
