AI-generated summary

Why It Matters

The match has implications for the percentage gap between Brisbane and Hawthorn in the AFL standings.

Font size

We told you earlier that before this game there was 2.2 per cent difference between Brisbane and Hawthorn.

As of now, the Lions are on 120.2, and the Hawks are on 117.3 - a difference of 2.9 per cent.

Not sure exactly what that does to the points gap needed on Sunday, but let's keep an eye on things as the second half progresses.

Logan Morris goes all right, doesn't he?

Collingwood aren't the first team to find this out, but Logan Morris really can turn a game - and quickly.

His three goals in a handful of minutes gave the Lions clear air in the second term, and his third of these, his fourth overall, was not bad either!

HT stats

Inside 50s: 27-23 Brisbane

Clearances: 21-20 Brisbane

Centre clearances: 8-7 Collingwood

Contested possessions: 61-58 Collingwood

Uncontested possessions: 119-107 Collingwood

Marks inside 50: 9-9

Tackles 35-25 Collingwood

Tackles inside 50: 9-4 Collingwood

Although the Lions had the better of that quarter, the Pies have the advantage in both possession stats, and they are bringing the pressure, particularly inside 50.

HT: Brisbane 10.3 (63) leads Collingwood 6.5 (41)

The siren sounds, and a late goal from Tim Membrey brings it back to 22 points at the long break.

But although it's better than it could have been for the Pies, they will not be happy going in.

Brisbane has outplayed the Pies in many respects, and in particular a certain Logan Morris has been incredibly hard to stop.

There's a bit of to and fro after the siren involving Billy Frampton and Darcy Fort, but there's nothing to it.

Time to go to the rooms and have some serious half-time talk from Craig McRae, methinks.

Oscar Allen bomb restores order for the Lions

That was better from the visitors!

They got the clearance and fed it to Oscar Allen just outside 50.

The former Eagles took the set shot - and DRILLED it from beyond the arc!

His teammates run to jump in his arms, and that's a team-booster right there. The lead is back to 29, late in the half.

Lions blow a big chance

That could be another big moment for Collingwood!

The Lions took control of the ball in D50 and went down the corridor at speed. The long kick through the middle for Charlie Cameron to run on to, it looked like it was a certain goal, but he slowed to go round a defender then handballed over the top to Logan Morris.

And Morris pulled his kick way wide - no score!

That's a huge blown chance for the Lions.

Charlie West gets one back for Collingwood

That was another of those multiple passages of play we've had tonight.

The Pies had a shot for goal and missed, but they quickly forced the turnover after the kickout, and it comes back to Charlie West, who marks and goals from the pocket.

BIG goal for the Pies, the lead is back to 23 points inside time on.

Bad news for Collingwood as Pendlebury ruled out

The news is getting worse for the Pies, with Scott Pendlebury sitting on the bench with a jacket on.

His night is over - a knee bursa, apparently.

he's been very good for them and has helped set up a number of Collingwood goals.

Hipwood goal pushes the Brisbane lead further

The Lions have found their groove here, and they are putting extreme pressure on the Pies defence.

And now they're on again! The ball goes to the left forward pocket and the ball is switched across 50 - and Eric Hipwood marks!

And he drills the kick! The lead is out to 30 points - things are progressing very nicely for the premiers. with nine minutes left in the half.

Concerns here for Hawthorn as well

The only people more worried about Logan Morris right now than Collingwood will be the Hawks.

That 24-point lead means the percentage gap between Hawthorn and Brisbane equates to about 11 goals.

That's roughly what Hawthorn needs to beat West Coast on Sunday to go third - IF the margin stays as it is right now.

Morris has four! Lions kick clear

This is some quarter by Logan Morris!

The Magpies are struggling to stop him.

The visitors benefited from a free kick in the middle where Will Ashcroft spilled the ball but then was bending (ducking?) as Ed Allan clipped him high.

The Lions took advantage, and the ball went into the right forward pocket where Morris marked.

He nailed the nick from a nasty angle, and the Lions are clear!

Morris has three in a handful of minutes and four for the game already! Alarm bells are ringing HARD in the Pies coaching box.

Morris has two in a minute!

Well, now. Over to you, Collingwood defence.

The Lions are in again, they go in from the opposite side of 50, but the effect is the same.

Logan Morris takes another mark, and he drills the kick.

That's two in a minute or just over, and the lead is out to 18 points.

Anything Pies can do, Lions can do too

Brisbane took that goal personally, and the visitors answer quick smart.

They loft it high from Darcy Fort to a contest - Logan Morris looks like he's gone too early, but he half-hovers in the air and takes the grab.

He goes back and kicks.

The umpire looks straight up as if he's rolling his eyes at a funny quip - he doesn't have to move!

Great goal from Morris and the Lions extend again.

Pies get the fast start again through Anderson!

It's fast and fierce in the opening salvos in the second quarter, but the Magpies finally break clear down the near wing.

A bit of a chaos ball bounces towards 50 and the Pies grab it and lofts one to the square - Angus Anderson gets it, and scores his second!

We're back to a kick the difference. I know we still have the wildcard round next week, but this is shaping like an early start to finals!

QT stats

Inside 50s: 14-12 Brisbane

Clearances: 12-9 Collingwood

Centre clearances: 5-3 Collingwood

Contested possessions: 28-27 Brisbane

Uncontested possessions: 76-60 Collingwood

Marks inside 50: 4-4

Tackles: 16-11 Collingwood

Tackles inside 50: 4-2 Collingwood

QT: Brisbane 5.3 (33) leads Collingwood 3.3 (21)

The siren sounds, and that's the end of a ripping quarter of footy.

There were missed chances for both sides, but also some brilliant attacking play.

Of course, there was THAT finish from Conor McKenna.

But just as important was a great late break on the counter by the Magpies, leading to Nick Daicos with his hands on the footy just outside 50 - and he unloaded for a goal to bring the Pies fans to a frenzy!

And then the Lions found a way to get a late, late one of their own. A kick inside 50 and Sam Draper standing tall and clunking the mark - and kicking from 20m out in his 100th game.

So after all that, the Lions lead by 12 points, after being as many as 19 in front at one stage.

Anderson misses chance to go back-to-back

Collingwood are looking dangerous on the break!

They go again and down the wing, it's a lovely kick inside 50 and again it's Angus Anderson who takes an uncontested mark.

But he's pushed the kick wide!

The lead is 12 points, but that could and should have been a goal.

Pies get vital goal from Angus Anderson

That's the answer from Collingwood!

They chop off a Brisbane attack in D50 and then move the ball quickly down the corridor.

Once again it's Scott Pendlebury who plays provider, chipping inside 50 for Angus Anderson.

And Anderson kicks it! Much needed for the Pies.

Open Questions

  • What is the final score of the match?
  • How will Collingwood adjust to the loss of Scott Pendlebury?
