Why It Matters

The match is an AFL Qualifying Final held at Perth Stadium. Fremantle has historically struggled against Hawthorn in recent years, despite a strong home record.

The Hawks are dominating in Perth right now. An intercept mark on the wing from James Sicily set up a kick to the pocket for the Hawks, and Jack Gunston received a free for a bump/bit extra. He slots it from the pocket, never looked like missing - the Hawks lead by 18 points deep in time on in the first quarter.

Hawthorn are beginning to take control here! They are getting more of the ball and looking dangerous. A bit of back and forth, but then Karl Amon's lasers a left-foot kick to the hotspot, and Mabior Chol marks at the second attempt! He goes back and kicks ... the reaction - or lack of it - tells you everything! That's three goals in a row for the Hawks, they lead by 12 points.

The Hawks are getting their feet under them, so to speak, in this game. As this quarter goes on, they are raising the pressure. A kick inside 50 deep left, and Dylan Moore gets it - and he rolls it home from the pocket!!

There are more misses here, and a kick from Hawthorn after a run-around that fell short. Is it players' technique, or nerves, or the slippery ball? The rain doesn't seem to be there right now, but a bit has fallen.

Whew, that was close for the home side! Isaiah Dudley earned a mark just on 50, his set shot started right then swung back - but it fell short and bounced in the square, for Jye Amiss to grab it and snap it skywards. The crowd roared ... but the ball went wide for a point. Dockers by the minimum.

There are no backward steps out there, and a suggestion that Dockers skipper Alex Pearce has already had to have a finger put back in. We have 13 minutes on the clock, it's 1.1 (7) apiece after an exchange of behinds from Massimo D'Ambrosio and Matthew Johnson.

The Hawks were struggling to get things going in attacking 50. But finally it worked, as the ball went in beyond Mabior Chol, Jack Gunston got a tap to it, it bounced off a Dockers hand, and fell for Nick Watson, who charged in at 90km an hour to soccer/half volley it through from 25 out! Just ummm ... magic.

It's been a strong opening for Freo, although Patrick Voss dropped a chest mark in the square after about 30 seconds. But after the Hawks made it inside forward half it broke down, and the Dockers hit back. A huge handball to the wing, and then a perfect chip inside 50 to Luke Jackson who takes a mark - and then slots the goal! Freo on the board!

Ok, it's time to go at a deafened Perth Stadium. Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir told Fox Footy before the game that Brandon Walker is going to get the big job on Nick Watson. Asked what his final message to the players was, Longmuir said he told them that finals football brings more mistakes. "Don't carry your mistakes with you," the coach said. A fair suggestion for all players out there tonight.

Open Questions

  • ?Will the rain impact the final score?
  • ?Can Fremantle recover from the early deficit?
