Late, late in the quarter, the Blues continue their momentum, surging the ball forward down the right wing.
It's Ollie Hollands running near the boundary, about to be crunched, who hooks it round his body for Brodie Kemp to mark inside 50. Kemp slotted it from a difficult angle inside the final minute.
But then the Demons find a way to go downfield, and it's Tom McDonald who marks and then kicks a goal with the final kick of the half!
What a finish! We have a cracking game here.

Ben Ainsworth missed a set shot at one end, and the Demons went down the other but there were just those same small margins. Hitting targets is always crucial, but especially in an eliminator like this one.

The Demons are forcing errors from the Blues.

In these days of slick interchanges, it's usually hard to keep track of who's on and off.
But Max Gawn is fairly recognisable, between the height and the beard and that gleaming dome.

Patrick Cripps kicks one as Carlton closes in

The Blues get it in midfield, Nick Haynes - who thankfully has returned to the field after an early knock - booms one deep inside 50.
A pack forms - and it's skipper Patrick Cripps who reaches up to snag it!

There are chances for both sides, but Harvey Langford took a great relieving mark in defence, and then the Dees went straight down the left - with Bayley Fritsch having a 1-2 with a teammate - but the final kick was chopped off by Harry Dean.
It must be hard to take a breath out there right now.
Carlton makes Melbourne pay!

That early chance missed by Melbourne, and Carlton lifts its game.
Ollie Hollands lays a strong tackle and gets the ball, he sends it forward and Harry McKay runs onto it in the left forward 50.
He handballs inbound to the square, where Ben Ainsworth is waiting and the former Sun boots it into the crowd for Carlton's second major of the game! That's important stuff.
Kozzy Pickett misses early chance for Demons
Melbourne has started strongly, and a burst downfield (with inaccurate disposal) has ended with Kozzy Pickett, who runs to 50 and kicks an inside-out kick that goes wide and is marked on the line. That should have been a goal.

The siren sounds at the MCG, and that has been a pretty solid first quarter for Melbourne.
They hold a 18-point lead at the first break, but it could have been a bit more to be honest.
At least the Blues have got on the board, and they will need a lot more from Francis Evans and Harry McKay and others.
Right now the Demons are in control, but they haven't broken this game open just yet.
Another quarter like that, however, and Carlton could be in a world of pain.

The Blues have been outplayed here, but they get a chance late in the quarter. Francis Evans gets a free on half-forward.
He drills a kick to left forward pocket, where Harry McKay gets a free for a hold by Daniel Turner.
McKay goes back, and this one is VERY needed.

Desperate footy at the MCG
We're inside time on in the opening term, and teh Blues are yet to register a goal.
Melbourne sense more chances, and they are raising the intensity again. Some ferocious fights for the footy on the wing, and then the Dees get it inside 50 and the Blues tackle for their lives.
But they can't hold back the tide. Another turnover allows the Dees's Jake Melksham to find Max Gawn - and Mr "I Own The All Australian Team" goes back and slots it!
The Dees lead by 21 points, with under five to go in the first term.

Bailey Laurie extends Melbourne's lead
This was NOT how Carlton drew up the start of this one.
The Demons are dominating the clearances here, and they are making it count.
This time they go down the right wing, and it's Jiath again (he's had a solid start at the MCG) who runs to 60, handballs in to Caleb Windsor, who sends Bailey Laurie free inside 50.
Laurie runs and his kick has an air of inevitability about it.
The Demons lead by 16 points, and Carlton needs a reply - and fast.

Now Melbourne breaks down the left, and it's running for Harvey Langford, who takes control, motors to the point of the arc and UNLEASHES a brilliant kick on the left that arrows perfectly inside the right-hand goalpost.
What a kick! Dees lead by 10 points with 14 on the clock in the first quarter.
