Alessandro Di Battista leaves Cuba: return to Rome after hospitalization

Alessandro Di Battista left Cuba today, September 11, to return to Rome tomorrow, after a 12-hour flight, and then probably enter the Policlinico Gemelli hospital. Due to his health conditions, according to some rumors, the trip would have been organized in stages and at low altitude. The former parliamentarian of the Five Star Movement, on the Caribbean island for a reportage for Il Fatto Quotidiano, underwent an emergency operation last week: towards the end of August he went to a healthcare facility for severe headaches. Then he was moved to the Santa Clara hospital and finally to the intensive care unit of the Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico Hermanos Ameijeiras in Havana. The clinical picture is still unknown.

The canceled flight on September 4th

From the start, Di Battista's family and friends asked for discretion. A first return trip, scheduled for Friday 4 September, was cancelled: an air ambulance was supposed to transport him from Havana to Rome, where the Gemelli doctors were waiting for him for an operation, but his condition did not allow it. Now, after the intervention carried out on September 5th in Cuba, some posts from his association 'Sidiarersi' have confirmed his return, explaining that the former five-star member would be ready to resume his battles and would be facing the delicate phase following the intervention "in the best possible way". "We would like to thank the doctors, nurses and physiotherapists who are taking care of him in these hours before returning to Italy", we read in a message dated 10 September.

The refusal of the flight paid for by the State

In the first days in Havana, the possibility that Di Battista had been offered to use a state health flight to return to Rome had caused controversy. Offer declined by the interested party, who had immediately opted for an air ambulance trip with costs covered by the insurance company with which he had taken out a policy.
