Alexander Zverev wins his second Slam at the 2026 US Open, beating Ben Shelton in the final

For Zverev it is the second Slam title in his career, after the one he won at Roland Garros last June

For Zverev it is the second Slam title in his career, after the one he won at Roland Garros last June.

Zverev and Shelton's path to the 2026 US Open

Ben Shelton, a 24-year-old from Atlanta, reached the final after coming from behind to beat compatriot Frances Tiafoe in the semifinal in a match that lasted over three and a quarter hours, which ended with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5. At Flushing Meadows Shelton also eliminated Carlos Alcaraz. For the 24-year-old this was his first slam final. The German Alexander Zverev, however, beat the Russian Karen Khachanov in the semifinals with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 7-6. It was Zverev's third consecutive Grand Slam final this season, after his first major title at Roland Garros and defeat to Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon. In the five previous matches, Zverev had always defeated Shelton, losing a total of just one set.

Elena Rybakina triumphs

In the last few hours the final of the women's singles tournament was also played: Elena Rybakina beat Aryna Sabalenka, holder of the title, in three sets with a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. Sabalenka, therefore, abdicates after two consecutive titles at Flushing Meadows. With the victory at the 2026 US Open, Rybakina goes to the top of the WTA rankings from Monday. For the Russian-born Kazakh tennis player, it is the third Slam trophy (out of four finals played), the first in New York: she also won Wimbledon in 2022, beating Jabeur, and the Australian Open in January, again beating Sabalenka. "It's an incredible feeling. It's still very hard to realize what has happened, I've achieved so many goals in these last few weeks. I'm so happy and very proud of all the work we've done. It's just incredible, I struggle to find the words, but I'm really very happy," commented Rybakina.
