Amanda Knox returns to talk about the Kercher case and the Cartwheel show

Almost twenty years after the Perugia crime, Amanda Knox returns to talk about the death of Meredith Kercher, the controversy over the stand-up comedy show Cartwheel and her relationship with Raffaele Sollecito. He does it to Verissimo, in the exclusive interview with Silvia Toffanin broadcast on Sunday. For the first time on television, Knox will be accompanied by her husband Christopher Robinson and her children Eureka and Echo.

Also at the center of the interview are the criticisms aroused by his recent stand-up comedy show Cartwheel, in which Knox brings his own story to the stage. A choice contested by Meredith Kercher's family, who expressed their pain at the use in a show of a story linked to the murder of the young British woman.

"I don't make fun of a murder", replies Knox. “His family lost a daughter and a sister in the most atrocious way possible and therefore they are justified in feeling forever angry, but I am sorry that they feel hurt by the wrong person.” Above all, Knox rejects the accusation that turning one's experience into a spectacle could contribute to trivializing violence against women. "The idea that my message is to normalize violence against women is false. Every time I talk about what happened to me, I'm also talking about what happened to Meredith. The fact that no one remembers the name of the person who raped and killed her is a tragedy."

The reference is to Rudy Guede, definitively convicted of the murder and sexual violence of Meredith Kercher. Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito, initially convicted of the murder, were definitively acquitted in 2015. Knox today links the two events through the theme of misogyny. “I think this is a story of misogyny: her life was taken away like she was worthless and I was put in prison like I was worthless, when we were both innocent.”

The relationship with Raffaele Sollecito

In the interview there is also space for Raffaele Sollecito, with whom Knox says he has maintained a loving relationship. “We still love each other,” he says. And he recalls an episode with a strong symbolic value: the trip to Gubbio that the two had planned for the morning after the night in which Meredith was killed and which, many years later, they finally managed to take together. “When I returned to Italy we finally made the trip to Gubbio that we had to make that morning,” she says. Knox's daughter was also with them. "He was pushing my daughter's stroller. A street artist approached him and asked him if the baby was his and he said no. At that moment it occurred to me that our lives could be different."

Apologies to Patrick Lumumba

However, the relationship with Patrick Lumumba, the musician and owner of the Perugia club whom Knox accused during interrogations and who was arrested and subsequently exonerated, remains more complex. "I apologized to Patrick Lumumba, because he was put in prison, he lost his business, he lost a lot, but my apologies are not enough for him,” says Knox.
