Andalusia elevates the seismic risk plan to the emergency phase after a magnitude 5 earthquake in Granada

The Minister of the Presidency, Health and Emergencies of the Government of Andalusia, Antonio Sanz, has elevated the Andalusian Emergency Plan for the seismic risk in Granada to emergency phase, operational situation 1, after registering a magnitude 5 earthquake with its epicenter in the Granada town of Alhendín.

This was reported by Sanz in statements to the media in which he also confirmed that the earthquake has caused more than 80 calls to the 112 Andalusia Emergency Service from all the Andalusian provinces, except Huelva and Cádiz.

"We are coordinating the possible resources and necessary actions, as well as coordinating with the Provincial Council and the affected town councils the possible situations and conditions, especially in homes, in buildings that may have occurred," he confirmed.

Given the situation, the counselor, like Emergencies 112 Andalucía, has recommended avoiding entering or leaving buildings unnecessarily. On public roads, it is advisable to stay away from facades, cornices, balconies, walls and any other element that could fall off and cause damage.

"And what we ask of citizens is to respect these signs and under no circumstances approach the affected areas. It is very important to remain calm in all cases and always follow simple self-protection measures," he clarified.

For the moment, as reported by Sanz together with local and health authorities, no fatalities or injuries have been recorded. At the moment, "firefighters and police are inspecting and marking the points where damage has been reported."
