Andersson: S does not want to raise the fuel tax - criticizes climate policy

The Social Democrats do not want to raise the fuel tax, Andersson says.

- We have no proposals to raise the fuel tax. On the contrary, we were in favor of the reduction that took place most recently.

At the same time, Andersson believes that Sweden has had four years of "totally failed climate policy", and refers to the fact that emissions have not decreased at the rate required for Sweden to meet the climate goals.

But it is not reduced tax on petrol and diesel that has been the problem according to the S leader.

- The big mistake has not been to lower the fuel tax. The big mistake has been that they have not taken care to make it easier for people to buy new electric cars, she says.

Rejects the investigator's proposal

However, according to the government's investigator Svante Mandell, higher prices for fossil fuels are an important control tool to make it more profitable to switch to electric cars.

But Magdalena Andersson rejects the investigator's proposal for a higher tax - and says that S has other solutions to get sales of electric cars started.

- I'd rather work with bonuses for those who buy or lease a used electric car than raise fuel prices.

The Social Democrats' proposals to reduce emissions include state support for those who buy or lease an electric car, and that the state should buy up large quantities of biofuel and thus push down the price of the renewable fuel.

If this policy leads to Sweden not reaching its EU goal by 2030 - is that okay?

- We are very far from this goal. We were about to reach the goal with the policy that was in place when I was in the government. Now we are very far from the goal and it is clear that it will be difficult to bring home four years of failed politics.
