The ministers' statement about electric car sales is incorrect

Later in the program, Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari was also asked how satisfied she is with electric car sales.

Romina Pourmokhtari: "We are third in the Nordics"

She then repeated the same number as Peter Kullgren.

- We are third in the Nordics, so it is good that Norway and Denmark are mentioned. I usually say, give me Norway's oil billions and I can speed up electric car sales much faster with the subsidies that the Norwegians can offer, Pourmokhtari said in Agenda.

The problem is that the ministers' claim about electric car sales is incorrect. This according to the industry organization Mobility Sweden.

- No, that is not true, both in 2025 and so far this year, we are actually last in the Nordics, says Jessica Alenius, CEO of Mobility Sweden, to SVT.

According to the statistics - which are based on the European industry organization ACEA's data - it is correct that Sweden was the third best in terms of electric car sales in the Nordics during the years 2022-2024.

"That's wrong!"

Since 2025 and until June 2026, Sweden has the lowest percentage of new electric car registrations in the entire Nordic region.

- Unfortunately, electric car sales in Sweden have stagnated in recent years. This is because, unfortunately, we have not kept the control instruments we had previously and that they have actually made fossil fuels more palatable for households and companies, says Jessica Alenius.

Mobility Sweden is asking for a more ambitious policy to boost electric car sales.

Now two ministers stood here in Agenda and said that we are the third best in the Nordics, what do you think about that?

- Yes, but it's wrong! Because in the Nordic region we are in fifth place. From a Nordic perspective, Sweden is the worst in the class.

The climate minister answers

On Monday, SVT will receive a written comment from the liberal climate minister.

"According to these statistics, Sweden is top 3 in the Nordics and in Europe. The Liberals want to push for electrification so that Sweden maintains its top position"

The statistics she refers to show the first seven months of 2025 and do not include Iceland.
