Stress toy exploded in Ankara, causing 2nd degree burns to child

Furkan Seçkin, one of the three children of Hümeyra and Erdal Seçkin, put the soft and flexible stress toy they bought from the toy shop in the shopping center in the refrigerator to harden.

The toy that Seçkin took out of the refrigerator exploded while he was playing with it. Redness and peeling occurred on Seçkin's skin as a result of the gel inside the toy leaking. Furkan Seçkin, who was taken to Yenimahalle Training and Research Hospital by his family, was diagnosed with a 2nd degree burn on his foot.

While the checks on Furkan, whose treatment was completed, were continuing, the family filed a criminal complaint against those responsible to the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, accusing them of "negligent injury", claiming that there was no sufficient safety warning on the packaging of the product.

'I CANNOT STAND THE PAIN MY CHILD IS SUFFERING'

Hümeyra Seçkin (45), a housewife mother, said that she bought the toy for her son as a reward for being successful in the exam and said, "It is a toy bought from a well-known toy store in a well-known shopping mall in Ankara. My child put the toy in the refrigerator in the evening. In the morning, he took it out and started playing. He called me from his room with a very heartbreaking and terrifying voice. He said, 'Mom, help me with my foot.' I ran and said, 'Mom, the toy exploded on my foot, it hurts so much.' I immediately took it to the shower, "I turned on the cold water. Then we went to the hospital. The doctors were very surprised and wanted to see the toy. My child has fallen behind in his studies. My only hope is that this toy would be taken off the market. A 3-4 year old child could tear it in his mouth," he said.

Electrical and electronics engineer father Erdal Seçkin (52) said, "We were very saddened that something like this happened to us with such an ordinary toy. Frankly, we decided to file a lawsuit after this burning incident and we will persistently seek our rights to the end. We will try to prevent others from being affected by this."

'WE DEMANDED THE FILE OF A PUBLIC CASE'

Handan Sayan Özgül, the family's lawyer, said that they filed a criminal complaint with the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and said, "We demanded that the people responsible for the supply and security control processes of the product be identified and a public lawsuit be filed against them. We filed a lawsuit against all units from the supply of this product to its distribution and from distribution to the consumer. How was this product supplied? Were there any security warnings on it? Were there any security inspections? What was revealed as a result of the security inspection? There is no warning on the product saying 'Do not put it in the closet'. We submitted our petition regarding this." "We have also applied for mediation. We will also file a lawsuit for compensation. We have not received any response yet. Our expectation in this process is to collect the toy or replace the box of the toy and add the necessary warnings," he said.
