After an accident that killed mother and son, Fernão Dias will be banned from installing a 90-ton walkway

The Fernão Dias Highway will have partial and total closures in the early hours of this Wednesday (14) in Vargem. The blockage will be used to install a new walkway.

The accident occurred on August 18 at km 4.1. Rosângela Carlos, aged 63, and her son Douglas Quaresma, aged 40, died at the scene.

In September, the court rejected the complaint against the truck driver. The judge considered that there was a lack of evidence of possible intent in the collision.

The structure is 45 meters long and weighs 90 tons. Manufactured by a company from Rio Claro, it arrived in Vargem last week.

The work will be concentrated on lifting and fitting the structure onto the support pillars, installed in recent days. According to the concessionaire responsible for the highway, the operation should mobilize up to 60 people.

During much of the work, vehicles will only have one lane available in each direction of Fernão Dias. Between 1am and 2am, it will be necessary to completely close the highway. Dealership teams will guide drivers during the operation.

Accident

The accident happened on August 18, at km 4.1 of the Fernão Dias Highway, in the Vargem section. At the time, Deyvidson Temudo de Oliveira was transporting a truck on a cargo vehicle (board) when the upper part of the load collided with the main beam of the walkway.

Rosângela Carlos Soares Chaves, aged 63, and her son Douglas Soares Quaresma, aged 40, died after the catwalk fell onto the car they were in.

Residents of Belo Horizonte (MG), Rosângela was a hairdresser and had worked in the profession for many years. Douglas was a sales representative for an optical company and served the Belo Horizonte region.

Married, Rosângela leaves behind her husband and two daughters. Douglas leaves behind his wife and a 6-year-old son. In addition to the car in which mother and son were traveling, the catwalk also hit another truck. The driver was injured and taken to hospital with minor injuries.

In September, the Court rejected the complaint filed by the Public Prosecutor's Office against the truck driver and revoked his preventive detention. In the decision, the judge considered that there was not enough evidence of possible intent and that there was still a lack of expert reports to clarify the dynamics of the accident.

The Public Prosecutor's Office had accused the driver of two completed and one attempted qualified homicides. The defense stated that the case was a traffic accident, with no intention of causing the deaths.
