Djokovic beats Borges in the first round of the ATP 500 in Beijing

Novak Djokovic beat Portugal's Nuno Borges in the first round of the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing with a score of 6:3, 7:6 (7:2). Sport Express reports this.

The 39-year-old Serb broke a three-game losing streak and won his first victory in almost three months. During the match, Djokovic felt unwell and vomited and consulted a physiotherapist. The doctor examined the athlete’s abdominal area.

In the second round, Djokovic will meet with Chinese Bu Yongchaokete, who entered the tournament on a wild card. Djokovic is playing in Beijing for the first time since 2015.

The series of defeats began on July 10 in the Wimbledon semifinals, where Djokovic lost to Italian Jannik Sinner. Then the Serbian lost at the start of the Masters in Cincinnati to Argentinean Thiago Agustin Tirante and at the US Open to Mariano Navone. Due to a series of setbacks, Djokovic left the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time since 2018 and is now number 11 in the world.

Djokovic previously won the Beijing tournament six times in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. During his career, the Serbian won 24 Grand Slam tournaments and won the ATP Finals seven times.
