Amazon cargo plane leaves the runway at Miami Airport and hits vehicles

A cargo plane left the runway after landing at Miami International Airport and struck several vehicles on Sunday afternoon (6), according to authorities.

The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft had taken off from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan (Puerto Rico) and landed at Miami airport around 2 pm local time, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement.

The Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue Department said more than 60 units were mobilized after the plane left the runway and struck several vehicles.

"Crews arrived at the scene and found an airplane that had caught fire as a result of the accident, with large flames and lots of smoke," the Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement. "Firefighters are working to extinguish the fire, and there are several people injured."

A video published by broadcaster NBC6 showed dense black smoke coming from the plane, which displayed the Amazon brand.

Greg Chin, a Miami airport spokesman, identified the aircraft as Prime Air Flight 7598. He said all runways and taxiways were closed as of 3 p.m. "and that takeoffs to the airport are suspended."

Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
