Man with knife killed in police shooting on Brooklyn Bridge

According to American media, including the Associated Press, on the 4th (local time), a man was shot dead on the Brooklyn Bridge after ignoring police orders to put down his weapon and approaching a police officer who was trying to rescue him.

The man went on a rampage on the bridge cables, saying he wanted to kill himself and claiming he had a bomb, according to New York City Emergency Services Commander Gerard Dowling.

Rescue workers persuaded the man that they would safely get him down for about an hour and ordered him to put down the weapon several times.

However, when the man came down the cable, approached within 0.9m of a police officer and raised his weapon, one of the police officers on the road side of the bridge fired a gun.

Officers administered first aid after the shooting, but the man died after being taken to the hospital. His identity has not been disclosed.

Police are investigating whether there was actually a bomb at the scene.

New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani said police responded to reports of a man who appeared to be trying to jump off a bridge and persuaded the man not to jump.

Mayor Mamdani said, "The man threatened the police officers with a weapon. He eventually moved towards the police officers and got very close to several emergency responders, and one of the officers opened fire."

In the aftermath of this incident, the Brooklyn Bridge, a famous landmark in New York, was closed for a time and severe traffic congestion continued in the area.

The Brooklyn Bridge, which connects Manhattan and Brooklyn, is a famous attraction that has been loved by New Yorkers and tourists since it opened in 1883.
