Two-year-old girl dies after emergency transfer from Rho to Milan, prosecutor opens case for manslaughter

A two-year-old girl died on the morning of Tuesday 9 September at the Buzzi hospital in Milan, where she had been transferred dying from the emergency room of the Rho hospital. The Milanese facility has reported the incident to the Prosecutor's Office, which is preparing to open a case for manslaughter. The Lombardy Region also intervened in the case, ordering a check on the procedures followed.

The reconstruction

The little girl arrived at the Rho emergency department late on Monday afternoon, accompanied by her relatives and with severe abdominal pain. Taken into care by doctors, she saw her condition worsen as the hours passed, until she suffered her first cardiac arrest. Once stabilized, she was urgently transferred to Milan, where she died.

The prosecutor's investigation

The death was confirmed in the morning at Buzzi. The prosecutor on duty Rosaria Stagnaro, who coordinates the investigation with the deputy Roberto Piscitello, will proceed in the next few hours with the registration in the register of suspects - as a guarantee - of the health workers who followed the little girl, as soon as she has the clinical documentation and a first reconstruction of the facts available. The next step will be the autopsy, necessary to ascertain the causes of death.

The Region's verification

The Lombardy Region asked Ats Metropolitan City of Milan (the former ASL) to check the procedures adopted in the case of the little girl. The ATS therefore ordered the establishment of a verification commission. "This is an extremely painful event in the face of which I express my most sincere closeness to the family", declared the regional councilor for Welfare Guido Bertolaso. "We have asked that the matter be investigated in every aspect and that the procedures adopted and the path followed by the little girl be carefully verified", he added. "As is necessary in cases like this, we also immediately notified the Public Prosecutor's Office."
