Bangkok declares a disaster due to flooding

The authorities in Bangkok have declared a state of emergency for all 50 districts of the Thai capital due to severe flooding. Nearly 300 millimeters of rain has fallen in Bangkok since Thursday, according to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt.

It has been raining almost continuously since Thursday afternoon, journalists from the AFP news agency reported. As a result, the streets were flooded. By declaring a disaster, local authorities can take emergency measures.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said the east of the city was hardest hit. The greatest danger threatens the residents along the canals. AFP journalists reported that the city's canals were swollen and many of the houses and restaurants along the banks were under water. Sittipunt warned of further rain.

The civil protection agency issued a warning of low pressure areas over eastern, northeastern and central Thailand up to and including Sunday. The authority said flash floods and mudslides could occur.
