Tokayev announced the need for military reform after the death of military personnel in Kazakhstan

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said the death of fourteen servicemen during exercises in the Caspian Sea exposed numerous shortcomings and problems with professionalism in the country's army.

“This tragic incident clearly revealed numerous shortcomings and lack of professionalism in the army. The time has come for a radical military reform. This is an urgent task. In connection with this, I have made personnel changes,” Tokayev said at a meeting with the leadership of the defense department.

The head of state noted that the new Minister of Defense Aidos Myrzakhmetov takes office at a difficult time. According to Tokayev, the minister is entrusted with exceptional responsibility; he will have to solve extremely difficult problems and take the most decisive actions.
