According to Dzhabarov, the veto plays a restraining role, and without it the UN will turn into the League of Nations.

MOSCOW, September 23 – RIA Novosti. Abolition of the veto power in the UN Security Council would be a tragic mistake; without this restraining mechanism, the organization would die on the same day, says Senator Vladimir Dzhabarov.

Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for the abolition of the veto power in the UN Security Council, saying that the current system no longer corresponds to the realities of the modern world. He also proposed abandoning the institution of permanent membership in the Security Council. All its members, the Turkish leader believes, should be elected by the UN General Assembly for certain terms.

“To rush to abolish the institution of veto power in the UN Security Council, as Erdogan proposes, means to risk repeating the tragic mistakes of the past. The main complaint against the League of Nations, which could not prevent the Second World War, was precisely that there was no mechanism for containing confrontation between the major powers,” the Russian politician wrote in his Telegram channel.

Therefore, when the UN was created in 1945, this particular mistake was corrected: the right of veto in the Security Council plays a restraining role, Dzhabarov noted.

“Without him, the organization will die on the same day, turning into the League of Nations,” the senator concluded.

The League of Nations - an international intergovernmental organization created in 1919 with the aim of developing cooperation between peoples and guaranteeing their peace and security - ceased to exist due to the formation of the UN.
