Democratic Party recaptures Namdong, Michuhol, and Ongjin... National Power, Jemulpo·Ganghwa Suseong

(Incheon = Yonhap News) Reporter Shin Min-jae = While the Democratic Party of Korea won a landslide victory in the June 3 local elections in Incheon, it also showed an advantage in the rematch between candidates for county mayor and district head.

In three of the five counties and districts in Incheon where return matches were held between candidates for heads of local organizations, the Democratic Party candidate avenged his defeat four years ago by defeating the incumbent head of the People Power Party.

In Namdong-gu, which is considered 'Incheon's No. 1 political district' due to the concentration of public institutions such as Incheon City Hall and the city office of education, former Incheon City Councilor Lee Byung-rae of the Democratic Party won again in four years against the incumbent district mayor, Park Jong-hyo of the People Power Party.

In Michuhol-gu, a rematch between former and current district mayors took place. Here, former district mayor Kim Jeong-sik of the Democratic Party defeated the current district mayor Lee Young-hoon of the People Power Party.

In Ongjin County, where former and incumbent county governors held a return match, former Democratic Party governor Jang Jeong-min succeeded in exacting revenge by defeating People Power Party's current county governor Moon Kyung-bok.

The People Power Party saved face by maintaining the positions of county and district mayors in two places, including the original city center and the border area.

In Jemulpo-gu, which will be launched next month by merging the inland areas of Incheon's Dong-gu and Jung-gu, Kim Chan-jin, the current Dong-gu mayor of the People's Power Party, had a rematch with former Incheon City Council member Namgung-hyung of the Democratic Party and won by about 200 votes.

In Ganghwa-gun, Park Yong-cheol, the current county governor of the People Power Party, once again defeated former Pyeongtaek City Vice Mayor Han Yeon-hee of the Democratic Party following the county mayor by-election two years ago and was up for re-election.
