Bill Gates warns that artificial intelligence could cause 20 years of economic and social turmoil

Speaking on the podcast program "Decoder", Gates said that the transition to an artificial intelligence-driven economy will potentially reshape the employment structure and raise questions about people's roles in society.

Gates stated that artificial intelligence could lead to a 20-year economic and social turmoil and said, "My biggest concern is this 20-year transition period, where there will be winners and losers and many shocks will occur." he said.

Underlining that society will need to overcome this turmoil before potentially entering an "age of abundance", Gates stated that developments in artificial intelligence and robotics will, over time, allow machines to undertake a large part of the physical work performed by humans, including building houses, growing food and even performing surgery.

On the other hand, Gates warned that governments and society are not sufficiently prepared for the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology.

Emphasizing the need for stricter state control and technical measures against cyber attacks and biological threats, Gates said that even under the most favorable conditions, the development of artificial intelligence could bring about one of the most turbulent periods in human history.
