Bitcoin: the United States becomes a net importer again, individuals sell to institutions

Quick Look

The Chainalysis report “Geography of Cryptocurrency 2026” reveals that the United States once again became a net importer of bitcoins in 2026, with a positive balance of cross-border flows for the first time since 2022, driven by institutional purchases via spot ETFs and implicit sovereign demand, while individuals sell their BTC and dollar stablecoins are exported massively to the rest of the world.

AI-generated summary

Why It Matters

The Chainalysis report “Geography of Cryptocurrency 2026” analyzes cross-border flows of cryptocurrencies in North America over twelve months, showing an overall decline of 1.9% in on-chain value received, but a strategic shift where the United States becomes a net importer of bitcoin for the first time since 2022.

Bitcoin in, dollar out. Chainalysis published the North America portion of its “Geography of Cryptocurrency 2026” report on October 14. Over twelve months, the region received $3.02 trillion in on-chain value, down 1.9%. But behind this half-hearted figure hides a shift. The United States once again became a net importer of bitcoins in 2026, a first since 2022. In fact, institutions buy more than individuals sell. The same report this morning measured the explosion of AI agent payments on Base. The Bitcoin aspect, however, tells something else: a country that hoards.

Key Points

US crypto economy at $2.78 trillion, down 2.2% in bear market.

Transfers above $10 million alone brought 53,200 BTC into the country.

Canada increased by 2.3% to 247.7 billion and took the world lead in cross-border flows.

Why the United States is sucking bitcoin from the rest of the world

The report measures bitcoin flows crossing US borders in both directions. Over the period ending July 1, 2026, the balance is positive. This hasn't happened since 2022, the year of FTX and on-chain liquidations. Chainalysis gives a simple explanation. “Since the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in January 2024, the U.S. share of global bitcoin activity has increased in each period.” Concretely, a spot ETF is a listed fund which must hold the bitcoins corresponding to the units issued. However, its depositaries are American. Thus, each dollar that enters an ETF repatriates bitcoins purchased on the global market.

Added to this channel are corporate treasuries, as well as implicit sovereign demand. The report notes that the federal strategic reserve has “added implicit sovereign demand to private supply, even without an explicit purchasing program.” The US crypto economy shrank 2.2% to $2.78 trillion. However, writes Chainalysis, “the almost doubling recorded over the 2025 period”, driven by ETFs, tokenization and stablecoins. BlackRock's Will Su adds a dated nuance. ETPs sold off in the first half of the year, when AI was attracting capital. Then entries resumed in the third quarter.

Individuals sell, institutions collect

The breakdown by transfer size tells who is selling to whom. Transfers less than $10,000 are net outgoing in each measured period. The large tranches are incoming. That of transfers beyond 10 million dollars alone represents 53,200 bitcoins arriving in the territory. The formula of the report is in one sentence: “individuals send bitcoin outside, institutions bring it in”. The market lost more than half its value between the October 2025 peak and the June trough. It is therefore the small American carriers who have sold their coins. And institutional assessments absorbed them at the other end of the notebook.

The movement can also be read in the composition of the activity. Stablecoins weigh less in American flows than anywhere else, and the gap widens with each period. The reason is almost trivial. “A dollar stablecoin is a way to hold dollars without a U.S. bank account, and Americans already have one.” As a result, writes Chainalysis, Americans “are relying more on bitcoin as an infinitely scarce store of value.”

The reverse export: the United States sells digital dollars to the world

If bitcoin comes in, the dollar goes out, in the form of stablecoins. The report recalls that 99.1% of stablecoin order books relate to dollar-backed tokens. Euro stablecoins, on the other hand, cap at 0.45% despite MiCA. Circle reported 73.3 billion USDC in circulation at the end of the quarter, up 19% year-over-year. This represents 14.8 trillion in on-chain volume in the quarter alone. The GENIUS Act of 2025 then formalized what other crypto economies already knew. The United States is “the leading exporter of digital dollars”. Chainalysis summarizes the national interest in one line. Imported bitcoin is accumulated, while exported stablecoins propagate the dollar.

What to Watch

AI outlook — possibilities, not facts

  • Institutional bitcoin inflows via spot ETFs will continue to grow over the coming quarters if implied sovereign demand maintains.

    Likely · Within months

  • The on-chain volume of dollar stablecoins, notably USDC, will remain high due to the formalization of the United States' status as the leading exporter of digital dollars by the GENIUS Act of 2025.

    Very likely · Within months

Open Questions

  • What is the exact amount of federal strategic reserves in bitcoin?
  • Will the bitcoin import trend continue after the expected market volatility in 2027?
  • How will other major economies react to the increased export of US stablecoins?
