The letter clarifying the Sussexes' status when returning to England shows King Charles's attempt to distinguish between the couple's personal activities and the Royal Family's public duties.

King Charles III on September 7 authorized the Minister of Palace, a senior royal official, to send a letter on his behalf announcing that Harry and Meghan would not be able to use their royal titles after returning to live in England.

"In short, their role is just that of ordinary citizens with commercial and charitable activities," the letter said, reaffirming that any activities carried out by Harry and Meghan are of a personal nature and do not represent the royal family.

Letters were sent to major agencies from parliament to the military. The tone and scope of the letter are considered by some researchers of the British royal family to be a tough and intentional reminder from King Charles to his son and his wife.

The letter mentioned milestones such as Harry and Meghan withdrawing from their duties representing the king and no longer working for the royal family since January 2020. Therefore, when they return to live in England, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not be called "Your Highness". The letter also clearly stated that the media and press should send questions about Harry and Meghan's activities in the UK to their team, not to the royal family.

Prince Harry and his family returned to Britain late last month, six years after giving up royal duties and moving to America.

"This letter actually doesn't tell us any new information. We all know that they have long since stopped taking on royal duties, so I wonder if there is a need to repeat it? Or is it that the Sussex family is about to hold a public activity this week so the royal family wants to clearly draw the line between the two sides? Either way, at least we all know the positions of both sides," Afua Hagan, a commentator on the British Royal Family in the UK, shared with Newsweek.

The British press reported that Meghan is preparing to return to work with a number of organizations she worked with when she worked for the royal family, including Smart Works - a unit that supports women with job interviews.

Ingrid Seward, author of the royal biography My Mother and I, believes that King Charles providing official written instructions will avoid Harry and Meghan's charity visits being misunderstood as official official activities, causing upset for royal members on duty.

"The letter is very clear and people need to understand it properly," she said. "If it is not clearly outlined, it will cause discomfort and obscure the position of royal family members who are shouldering official responsibilities, especially Crown Prince William and Princess Kate."
