Argentina demands Britain stop oil production off the Falkland Islands

Argentina demands that Great Britain take measures within two weeks to prevent oil production off the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands.

In case of failure to comply with the requirement within the prescribed period, Argentina will appeal to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.

Argentina will continue to firmly assert its sovereign rights, using all instruments provided by law.

Argentina demands that Great Britain take measures within two weeks to prevent oil production off the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands and, if this demand is not met, it will appeal to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the press service of the president of the Latin American country reported.

“Argentina has formally demanded that the UK, within two weeks, take the necessary measures to prevent the commencement or continuation of activities to develop hydrocarbon resources on the Argentine continental shelf. If this requirement is not met within the prescribed period, Argentina will appeal to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea with a request to take the measures necessary to protect sovereign rights over its continental shelf,” the statement says.

The press service noted that Argentina does not intend to remain idle and will continue to firmly defend its sovereign rights, using all diplomatic, administrative and legal instruments provided for by national and international law.

There is a long-standing dispute between the Argentine and British governments regarding sovereignty over the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). In 1982, a war broke out between the two countries, which lasted several weeks and ended with the defeat of Buenos Aires.
