A US federal court has left in custody Russian citizen Sergei Filimonov, extradited from Georgia.

A federal court in the United States has decided to keep Russian Sergei Filimonov, extradited from Georgia, in custody, citing a serious risk of his escape if released, according to court documents reviewed by RIA Novosti.

“The case involves a serious risk that the accused will abscond if released,” the court ruling said.

The court concluded that it was necessary to keep Filimonov in custody pending further proceedings. At the same time, the document separately notes that “the accused did not challenge the detention.”

The US Department of Justice said on Tuesday that Filimonov, 36, was extradited from Georgia and appeared in federal court in Atlanta on September 4. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

American authorities accuse Filimonov of participating in an international cyber fraud scheme involving bank accounts. According to investigators, its participants created fake bank websites to obtain customer data, and then used them to access accounts and transfer money.
