Why It Matters

Costs increase while Japanese people reduce partying, leaving popular pubs struggling, with the number of bankruptcies in the first half of the year highest in 37 years

The number of Izakaya (traditional Japanese pubs) going bankrupt in the first half of 2026 reached 118, the highest level since 1989, due to increased costs, decreased revenue and changes in drinking and drinking habits of Japanese people. The policy of reducing tax on takeaway food from 2027 is expected to deepen the shift to eating at home, increasing pressure on small restaurants that are already suffering from lack of human resources, increased rent and ingredients.

Vietnamese government bonds are insulated from the global sell-off wave thanks to the high proportion of domestic investors

Vietnamese government bonds are less directly affected by the sell-off wave in Japan, UK, Germany and the US thanks to the proportion of domestic investors reaching nearly 99.85%, while foreign investors only own about 0.15% and participate in low transactions. However, experts warn about indirect transmission channels through exchange rates, inflation and monetary policy when the market expands further.

The price of solar power installation varies by tens of millions of dong, but the cheapest option is not necessarily economical if there are costs for repairing and replacing equipment.

With an electricity bill of 2-3 million VND/month, a family in Ho Chi Minh City can install a 5-7 kWp solar power system combined with a 16 kWh storage battery at a cost of about 150 million VND and a payback period of 3.5 years. However, quotes from 100-120 million VND need to be carefully checked for configuration and accompanying items to avoid costs incurred after installation such as repairing or replacing equipment due to poor quality or improper construction.

Law on Small and Medium Enterprise Development: Support by design, not by budget

The article evaluates that the most effective policies to support small and medium-sized enterprises are those that automatically apply without the need for documents, approval or budget, such as reducing VAT by 2% and abolishing business conditions. It advised the Law on Small and Medium Enterprise Development to focus on designing a new philosophy: exempting records, not creating new agencies, not establishing funds, and introducing four specific budget-free policies including revenue-based tax, quick deduction of investment, attaching payment obligations to the buyer's taxes, and simplifying bankruptcy procedures for small businesses.
