Carlos Body, the most moderate minister who is not a member of the PSOE, has already accumulated three portfolios in the final stretch of the campaign

As the very difficult elections approach, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, is increasingly turning to the minister with a less polarizing profile and who, furthermore, is not a member of the PSOE.

Carlos Cuerpo Caballero (Badajoz, 1980) is now in charge of "temporarily" assuming the Transport and Mobility portfolio after the resignation of Óscar Puente, as announced by Pedro Sánchez. He justified the appointment by "his management capacity and integrity" and because "he has the spirit that the country needs." This he stated in contrast to the polarizing policy of erecting walls that the PSOE leader has practiced over the last eight years.

Corps, technician and commercial economist of the State with command of languages ​​and recognized technical profile, he has already accumulated three portfolios. On the one hand, the original that he received in December 2023 from Economy, Commerce and Business when he replaced his 'godmother' in the Government, Nadia Calviño. On the other hand, the first vice presidency of the Government that Sánchez granted him last March in preparation for a more moderate profile for the final stretch of the legislature. And since this Tuesday, add to that that of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, which Puente has had to leave after two railway tragedies in nine months under its political responsibility. The constant recourse to Corps contradicts the official version that 22 ministries are necessary. The Minister of Economy also chairs the Delegate Commission for Economic Affairs, although always under the guidelines of Moncloa, which does not grant the first vice president all the power that could be expected from the position.

Body's career is meteoric. In 2020 he had to jump to the Ministry when he was not chosen to preside over the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF) where he served under José Luis Escrivá. He entered as General Director of Macroeconomic Analysis in the then Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, but Calviño soon promoted him to Secretary General of the Treasury. From this position he traveled with her to Brussels and replaced her on occasions in the Council of Finance Ministers of the EU (Ecofin), which later helped him to build relationships for one of his possible future ambitions: an international position. The always ambitious Corps tried with just one year of minister to be president of the Eurogroup in 2025, but had to withdraw against the Greek candidate of the European People's Party, Kyriakos Pierrakakis.

In parallel, Corpo has gained appreciation in the private business sector for his spirit of dialogue and is a regular interlocutor for CEOE. He has not been involved in scandals, except for his unusual attempt in 2024 to make a director of the Bank of Spain, Judith Arnal, resign, despite the fact that they are theoretically independent positions. Escrivá protected her from the minister.
