Malagò case: CONI starts investigations into FIGC membership

A team of jurists expert in sports law set up by Coni to judge the case of Giovanni Malagò's failure to register. The National Olympic Committee will now investigate the vote in the football federation and verify whether there were violations in the process that led to the elections: the indication, while dismissing everything, was given by the attorney general for sport.

"Taucer reiterated that the possession of a valid membership must be one of the requirements for candidacy and eligibility and that the FIGC has not concretely applied the fundamental principles which have therefore been violated - the words of the number one of the CONI, Luciano Buonfiglio, after the Council in which he read a document which retraced the entire history of the Malagò case arising from the appeal of Renato Miele -. For this reason the CONI which supervises all the federations will now appropriate legal investigations". A position therefore opposite to what the federal prosecutor's office led by Chiné had initially judged, which had indeed confirmed the absence of membership at the time of the elections, but not considering it a fundamental requirement.

In short, the final word on the matter will be up to the Olympic Committee, which for 12 years was Malagò's home, today still a member of the council to which the president of the Football Federation presented his report.

"Luciano - says Malagò - read two objective pages in the Council which I greatly appreciated, I only integrated them with my own considerations, not because there were things that were not true, but I added some elements that were perhaps missing". These were the only declarations - leaving Palazzo H - from Malagò who will now await the verdict of the Italian National Olympic Committee. "I certainly won't carry out the checks, we will rely on jurists recognized as such in the sporting world - explains Buonfiglio -. The Football Federation deserves respect like all the others, it is not haste that we want, but the certainty of the law that we pursue and that will push me in these days which I hope will not be many".

Therefore he does not go too far on the timing, but on one aspect he does not allow any replies: "In this matter I never personalize anything, I only serve the interests of the body I represent and the world of sport. I remind everyone that CONI is a public body and I am a public official, but Giovanni is not angry with me.

It is clear that this whole situation is not good for football and the sporting world, these situations do not make people live peacefully. But we need to stay balanced, I forced myself to do that."
