The body of the child Rhavy was found in May 2025, initially treated as clinical death, but examinations revealed internal injuries caused by aggression.
According to the Public Ministry of the State of Alagoas (MP-AL), Manoel Pedro Tavares de Souza was sentenced to 50 years in prison, in an initially closed regime, for the death.
Rhavy's body was found inside the couple's residence on May 13, 2025. Initially, the case was treated as clinical death, but cadaveric examinations identified internal injuries.
One day after the death, the Legal Medical Institute (IML) reported that the child died after suffering a ruptured liver caused by aggression. According to the agency, the injury was caused by a blow to the back.
During the trial, held at the Barro Duro Forum, in Maceió, both the mother and stepfather denied having murdered the boy.
Witnesses reported, during the jury, that attacks against Rhavy were frequent. According to reports, Nicole Maria was the one who attacked the boy and the other two children.
The child's nanny, identified only as Viviane, said that, days before the crime, Rhavy complained of a headache. She also said that she had already seen marks of aggression on the boy's body on other occasions.
Witnesses also reported an episode in which Rhavy had his eyes glued together and had to be taken to an Emergency Care Unit (UPA) and, later, to the State General Hospital (HGE), to remove the material from his eyes.
"They were going to the grocery store and I saw his [Rhavy] red eye. So I asked what it was and she [the mother] said that he had glued the eye himself. I asked him about there being no glue on his hand and he [the stepfather] said he couldn't explain it, but he thought he had glued the eye himself," said Williams da Silva Braga.
During the jury, Manoel Pedro Tavares de Souza stated that he was not working at the time of the crime and that he was involved in drug trafficking in the Riacho Doce region.
"I was a drug dealer, but these hands here would never kill a child, because in this environment it is not forgiven. I want justice to be done, but for real, and condemn whoever really did this to the child", he declared.
