Casualties and Missing Persons Reported Following Disaster in China and Nepal

As of Thursday afternoon, three people are confirmed dead and 265 missing on the Chinese side, with 177 dead and over 644 missing in Nepal.

The Nepali prime minister’s office said 484 tourists were missing, including 391 foreign nationals from at least 26 countries.

Among them are 142 from India, 47 from the United States, 34 from Australia, 33 from Britain and 24 from Canada. Malaysia has confirmed that 55 citizens are among the missing. Sunil Sharma, a spokesman for the Nepal Tourism Board, told Associated Press that 133 of the missing tourists were Indian pilgrims.

Chinese authorities have mobilised more than 1,500 rescue personnel, including firefighters, soldiers and engineering teams, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management. Vice-Premier Zhang Guoqing had arrived at the scene to direct operations but a newly formed barrier lake was complicating rescue efforts, China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported on Thursday that it had recovered 165 bodies, with 826 people still missing.
