Munich selected as Germany's candidate city to host Summer Olympics

German Olympic Committee Chairman Victor opened the envelope on the stage of a special meeting on the 26th and announced that Munich will represent Germany to bid for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Summer Olympics.

Munich, a large city in southern Germany, defeated the Cologne/Rhine-Ruhr region on the 26th and was selected by the German Olympic Committee (DOSB) as a candidate city to apply to host the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Summer Olympics on behalf of Germany.

The decision was announced by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in the spa town of Baden-Baden in southwestern Germany. Originally, four cities were vying to bid for the Olympics on behalf of Germany, of which Hamburg and Berlin withdrew one after another, leaving only Munich and Cologne/Rhine-Ruhr to compete.

Bavaria Prime Minister Markus Soeder said after his victory in Munich, the capital, that they were considering the whole of Germany and hoped to work together with other places to bring the Olympics to Germany. "This is an opportunity to create an event of historic significance. We must do our best to show the unity of Germany from south to north and from east to west."

Munich's Olympic bid program centers on the Olympic Park in the North District, which was built for the 1972 Munich Olympics and has been significantly renovated in recent years.

Germany has applied for the Olympic Games seven times since the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, but all have failed. If Munich can successfully bid for the Olympics, it will be the third time that Germany has hosted the Summer Olympics. The first two were the 1936 Berlin Olympics during the Nazi period and the 1972 Munich Olympics, which belonged to West Germany at the time.

A fatal tragedy occurred at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Palestinian radicals broke into the athletes' village, killing 11 members of the Israeli delegation.
