Temporary ceasefire to repair the power line of the Zaporozhye nuclear plant

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said in a statement published by the agency via the "X" platform that a new local ceasefire came into effect Saturday, mediated by the IAEA, to allow for the repair of the power line necessary to restore external power supply to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant after a prolonged outage.

The statement explained that on August 20, due to military activity on the northern side of the Dnipro River, the plant lost its connection to its single remaining power line, the 330 kV "Feroslavnaya-1" line.

Since then, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been relying on backup diesel generators to cool its six reactors and spent nuclear fuel storage pools.

The agency clarified that diesel fuel stocks at the plant are currently declining, warning of the potential for a complete blackout at the plant within a few days if external power supply is not restored or if additional fuel cannot be delivered to the site located in an area experiencing active hostilities.

According to the agency, Ukrainian specialists will begin repairing the damaged power line on Saturday under the temporary ceasefire, following the clearing of mines from the area.

Grossi stated that both sides cooperated constructively with the IAEA to ensure nuclear safety and security.

IAEA teams will monitor the repair work during the ceasefire, which is the seventh ceasefire negotiated by Grossi as part of efforts to help prevent a nuclear accident during the conflict.
