The center party and Tidösfären's lullaby - why doesn't C dance to the melody?

Do you hear the tones? Even before the votes were counted and the election posters were taken down, politicians and opinion leaders in Tidösferen turned into snake charmers. The whistle has come and the Center Party will be lured to the right.

The idea is, on the surface, understandable: getting rid of the Left Party and instead getting bourgeois economic policy sounds like a hit for a liberal party.

Why doesn't C dance right after the melody?

Possibly for the same reason that the Social Democrats and the Left Party had been able to get through a different unemployment insurance and dental care reform in a government collaboration with the Sweden Democrats - but refrained.

Because we've seen how it turns out. Before the 2022 election, one could think that it would be possible to check SD in government negotiations. After the Tidö Agreement was presented, no one can believe that the bourgeois are capable of it. Sweden got reporting, deportation and immigration policies. The divisive rhetoric and attacks on Muslims and immigrants fed into the government parties - both M and KD have representatives who, after Sunday's election, spread SD's conspiracy theories about imported vote cattle.

The cooperation has been justified with a focus on "solving social problems", but that does not hold.

Islamists are not fought by legitimizing a party that suspects, and incites against, all Muslims. A policy that works for motorists does not have to be enforced at the expense of the climate - but with a party that in principle denies climate change, it becomes so.

On election day, Veronica Maggio posted an Instagram post, and said it felt like a more fateful election than usual: "Often red or blue has just meant different strategies to reach roughly the same goal. A cooling-off day here or a tax cut there. A more favorable climate for business, or away with welfare gains, what do I know." A bit clumsily written perhaps, economic policy is of course important. But the starting point itself was shared by many. Maggio continued: "SD has a nationalist idea of ​​Swedishness, culture and assimilation that goes beyond the mere question of how many people Sweden should accept. This is bigger than a wallet decision."

Veronica Maggio has removed the post after the election, but the thought should stick in our heads as one of her refrains. Before we can argue about the economy, we must unite as a "we" again.
