Chinese researchers have developed the world’s smallest CT scanner, a portable device designed to produce images of tiny fossils and archaeological relics.
Built by the Shandong province-based Rayim, the Xtomo-Cube is about the size of a desktop speaker and weighs just 6kg (13.2lbs).
“The device can be held in one hand and is the world’s smallest and lightest CT system, earning it the nickname ‘palm-sized CT scanner’,” Liu Baodong, a senior engineer at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and general manager of Rayim, told the Science and Technology Daily on Monday.
The machine had a spatial resolution of 80 micrometres, roughly the width of a human hair, and could analyse objects from snail shells to medicine capsules, Liu said.

Lockheed Martin announced the FLEX modular concept of the AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Missile (JASSM) family. Through a common missile body and replaceable components, the same missile architecture can be adapted to air-launched, ship-launched, land-launched and submarine-launched, and supports different sensor modules, aiming to reduce the development time and cost of new models. JASSM-XR will be the first to adopt this architecture, with a range close to or exceeding 1,600 kilometers.

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro series went on sale on September 18. 3C expert Tim pointed out that the key to judging whether it is cost-effective to buy a short phone or tie up with a telecom contract lies in the original monthly rental fee. Taking the 256GB version as an example, the empty unit is priced at 44,900 yuan, and the project price is 26,300 yuan with a 36-month contract. If the original monthly rent of 599 yuan rises to 1,399 yuan, the actual purchase cost will reach 55,100 yuan, which is 10,200 yuan more than an empty machine. If the original monthly rent is 999 yuan or more, you may save thousands of dollars by tying the contract. The article reminds that the difference in monthly rent needs to be included in the purchase cost, and points out that discounts such as old-for-new, discounts, etc. may affect the final price.
China's private rocket company Orient Space's Gravity-1 Yao-3 carrier rocket was ignited and lifted off from the sea east of Shanghai at 6:00 on September 16. It successfully launched a total of 26 Qianfan polar orbit satellites and a total of 9 satellites of the EUHT technology test satellite into the predetermined orbit, setting a new record for China's single sea launch payload weight and orbital altitude. The net payload exceeded 3 tons and the orbital height was about 800 kilometers.
The 2026 Computing Power Network Development Conference was held in Beijing from September 15th to 16th, focusing on the computing power network, one of the country’s “six networks.” Academicians, experts, industry leaders and other representatives discussed the construction of a national integrated computing power network system, technological innovation and ecological collaborative implementation path, aiming to promote the construction of a network power, digital China and smart society.

The International Advanced Technology Application Promotion Center (Greater Bay Area) exchanged memorandums with the Hong Kong Productivity Council and launched the country's first Guangdong-Hong Kong low-altitude economic bilateral sandbox cooperation mechanism. The test scope was expanded to the cross-border scenario in the Greater Bay Area, aiming to promote the docking of rules and standards and the coordinated development of industries.
The 2026 National Cyber Security Awareness Week was held in Jinan. Experts pointed out that AI large models have caused a sharp increase in the number of network vulnerability discoveries, attacks have industrialized production capabilities, and the risk level has fundamentally changed. Representatives from Huawei, China Southern Power Grid and the Ministry of Public Security called for a shift from passive defense to active coordinated defense and digital identity protection to build a three-dimensional defense system.
