Christian von Stetten confirms Merz as the right man for CDU leadership

Christian von Stetten, chairman of the Mittelstand parliamentary group (PKM), rejected speculation about a change at the top of the CDU. "The question of leadership in the CDU does not arise - and it has never seriously arisen," von Stetten told the "taz". Merz and his reform course were confirmed with more than 91 percent at the CDU federal party conference.

“The Chancellor knows exactly what reforms our country needs now and has the full support of our colleagues in the Bundestag,” von Stetten continued. For the necessary reforms, Merz is “the right man in the right place at the right time.”

The PKM is the largest group within the Union parliamentary group and, according to its own information, organizes around 80 percent of the Union MPs. Von Stetten is also the group's medium-sized business policy spokesman. His support for Merz is also notable because just a few days ago he called for the dismissal of SPD Labor Minister Bärbel Bas.

That would have meant the breakup of the black-red coalition; the Chancellery denied such plans.
