The Brazilian automotive market faces high interest rates, but maintains positive performance in Campinas due to the presence of rental company headquarters and industry groups.
Campinas registered 3,145 new vehicles registered in August, reaching a daily average of 101 units. The performance surpassed the average recorded between January and July.
Local growth follows the national increase of 16.8% in registrations in August. Fenabrave attributes the positive result to the fall in the Selic rate and the heated market.
Passenger cars led the month's registrations in the city, totaling 1,876 units sold. The volume represents 59.6% of all new registrations in August.
In the same period, 895 motorcycles were licensed, representing 28.4% of sales. The survey also included registered light commercial vehicles, trucks and buses.
Campinas (SP) surpassed the mark of 100 new vehicles registered per day in August. According to Fenabrave (National Federation of Motor Vehicle Distribution), there were 3,145 brand new units registered in the month, which represents, on average, 101 per day.
The performance is 6.5% higher than that observed between January and July, a period in which the city recorded 20,114 registrations and a daily average of 95 vehicles.
The survey considers cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and motorcycles.
The numbers in Campinas follow the performance recorded on the national scene. According to Fenabrave, registrations in Brazil in August increased by 16.8% compared to the same period of the previous year.
"The results remain positive, even in an environment in which the cost of credit is still high. The gradual reduction of the Selic rate and the maintenance of a heated job market are favorable signs, although it is still necessary to monitor the evolution of the economy in the coming months", highlighted Arcelio Junior, president of Fenabrave.
For economist Roberto Brito de Carvalho, from PUC-Campinas, the performance draws attention because it occurs in an adverse economic environment for the automotive sector.
According to the expert, high interest rates make vehicle financing more expensive, the main modality used to purchase cars in the country, and make it difficult for lower-income consumers to access credit.
Even so, factors such as the activities of rental companies, dealerships and buyers with greater purchasing power help to sustain the market in Campinas.
According to the economist, when the network is close to reaching targets set by automakers, it can choose to register vehicles in its own name and later direct them to rental operations.
Carvalho believes that Campinas is the focus of this movement because it is home to the headquarters of important groups in the automotive sector.
"Often it's the dealerships themselves trying to hit the target when there's little to go and get the registrations done, even if it's just to place them on the lease. The cars are registered here, even if they are sent to other territories to be used in their other units", he states.
Passenger cars represent the largest portion of brand new vehicles traded in August in Campinas. There were 1,876 units, equivalent to 59.6% of the total.
895 new motorcycles were traded in the month, which represents 28.4% of the total volume. The best performance was recorded in March, when Campinas received 1,094 new motorcycles.
