There are fewer and fewer marriages and a growing number of divorces in Poland, according to Central Statistical Office data

The Central Statistical Office reported that in 2025, over 60,000 judgments were passed in Poland. divorces and approximately 600 separations. At the end of 2025, there were 8.5 million marriages, i.e. almost 80 thousand more. less than a year earlier. The number of newly concluded marriages in Poland has been decreasing every year for 15 years.

"The data shows that the decision to break up is usually not made lightly. The average marriage that ends in divorce lasts about 15 years," the Central Statistical Office emphasized.

Reasons for divorce

He noted that the most common cause of divorce (60%) remains incompatibility of characters. Next, the causes include: lack of fidelity or alcoholism. Moreover, according to the Central Statistical Office, most divorces (85%) end with a judgment without an indication of guilt.

Katarzyna Góral-Radziszewska, deputy director of the Department of Demographic Research of the Central Statistical Office, emphasized that in 2025, in the case of minor children, the court most often agreed that their parents would raise them together. Only in the case of every fifth divorce decreed, the court entrusted custody of the children solely to the mother, she pointed out.

The age of the average divorcee

"One of the most noticeable trends of the last 25 years is the increase in the number of divorces among very long-married couples. The percentage of people divorcing after the age of 50 and after at least 30 years of marriage has more than doubled - from 4% in 2000 to 9% in 2025," the Central Statistical Office reported.
