Cremona tries to recover after the bad weather: 50 displaced people and damage to the Cathedral

Cremona is trying to get back on its feet after the violent wave of bad weather that hit the city and the provincial territory on Friday, while interventions and checks on the damage continue unabated. 50 people have been displaced and 939 requests for intervention have been received by the Fire Brigade since the beginning of the emergency.

The work continues unabated: 137 interventions have been carried out, 9 in progress and 366 still to be completed. In the center of the city, the Cathedral, with its severed spire, remains the most evident symbol of the devastation. The first checks, also carried out with drones, gave positive results on the structural conditions of the Cathedral and a high-tech intervention is planned tomorrow to make it safe. Today, despite the damage inflicted by the storm, Sunday mass was still celebrated. "That of the cathedral is the wound of the city which is identified with its symbols, the Duomo, the Torrazzo and the town hall", said the bishop, Monsignor Antonio Napolioni, in the message sent to the Diocese from his pilgrimage to Bavaria, assuring that we will work "together for the treatment and redevelopment of the affected territory".

"Cremona will be able to raise its head again this time", he added. Firefighters, Civil Protection and municipal workers are still at work: Mayor Andrea Virgilio has indicated "city schools and educational institutions" as a priority, in addition to the removal of "unsafe elements, plants, trees and cornices".

According to the regional councilor for Welfare Guido Bertolaso, today in Cremona for the control room on the emergency, "a phenomenon of this power could have caused victims. If there were no victims, the credit goes to an excellent, instant intervention, also by the health service". Over the space of an hour, over 40 citizens arrived at the emergency room with trauma and injuries and more than 30 CT scans were carried out.

The President of the Region Attilio Fontana has asked the Government to extend the state of emergency to all the Lombardy territories affected by the bad weather. "Bertolaso ​​assured us that confirmation should also arrive for our territory this week and this is important to ensure we have resources and allow us to intervene in a timely manner to restore the situation", writes the mayor of Cremona, Andrea Virgilio, on social media. Tomorrow the governor will be in Cremona. Meanwhile, there are dozens of private individuals who are cleaning up streets and properties with brooms, shovels and chainsaws. Among the injured still hospitalized, four in total, is Angelo, who was trapped in his car after a tree fell: "I feared the worst, but I will never stop thanking those who saved me. I feel like a miracle worker."
