The International Symposium on Deep Earth Exploration and Four-Dimensional Topography of Asia is guided by the China Geological Survey and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and is hosted by the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, China University of Geosciences (Beijing), Chengdu University of Technology, Geological Society of China and Southern University of Science and Technology. Hou Zengqian and Wang Chengshan, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, co-chair the scientific committee of the conference.
China News Service, Beijing, November 8 (Reporter Huang Yuqin) On November 7, the International Symposium on Deep Earth Exploration and Asia’s Four-Dimensional Topography opened in Beijing. Experts and scholars from many countries and regions conducted exchanges on topics such as the earth's internal structure and dynamic processes, the formation of mineral and energy resources, earthquakes and geological disasters, and provided scientific support for resource and energy security, disaster prevention and reduction, and sustainable development.
Xie Chengxiang, chief engineer of the Ministry of Natural Resources, said in his speech that deep earth science is the frontier of earth system science. This conference will deeply integrate deep earth exploration with the four-dimensional terrain evolution of Asia, which will surely inject new development impetus into global deep earth science. He put forward three suggestions. First, deep and shallow coupling should be used to jointly solve the mystery of earth exploration. Focusing on key scientific issues such as deep earth exploration and deep-shallow coupled geological processes, we will carry out transnational and interdisciplinary joint research to lead and support the scientific development of the global earth system. Second, collaborate to tackle key problems and jointly build an open cooperation platform. Build a unified data platform, promote international sharing, and jointly build major infrastructure for deep earth scientific research, so that the results of deep earth scientific research can contribute to the common development of mankind. Third, move towards the new and jointly cultivate talents for career development. Rely on international cooperation and other projects to carry out cross-border exchanges, joint training and collaborative research of young scientists to build a solid talent foundation for the sustainable development of earth sciences.
Lan Yujie, member of the Party Leadership Group and Deputy Director of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. Lan Yujie said that this conference is an international event to jointly plan the development of earth sciences. The conference will promote the development of deep earth research, promote exchanges and mutual learning of the latest results, help cultivate talents, and expand the boundaries of human cognition.
Lan Yujie emphasized that the National Natural Science Foundation of China has always insisted on "strengthening the strategic, forward-looking, and systematic layout of basic research" and "expanding space for international cooperation." It is sincerely hoped that through this conference, on the basis of continued in-depth dialogue, mutual understanding and tolerance, and shared responsibility, we can build a bridge of cooperation, closely connect scientific researchers, research institutions and social groups, and build an interdisciplinary, cross-field, and cross-border deep earth knowledge and trust network, thereby promoting the academic community to focus on the common challenges of deep earth science, support excellent scientific research, cultivate outstanding talents, produce original results, and contribute to building a more sustainable, healthier, and more prosperous future.
It is reported that the conference will set up 38 scientific sub-venues and 5 strategic forums and round-table discussions. The topics cover the fields of geology, geophysics, geochemistry and scientific drilling. Representatives from relevant companies will be invited to participate in exchanges to promote multi-disciplinary intersection and industry-university-research cooperation.
Focusing on resource and energy security, the conference set up topics such as deep mantle dynamics and mineralization, the Central Asian Orogenic Belt and key minerals, deep and ultra-deep oil and gas exploration, and paid attention to emerging resources such as geological hydrogen. At the same time, regarding earthquakes and geological disasters, the conference will exchange research progress on fault zone activities, crustal stress changes, and rapid scientific response to major earthquakes, and explore how to improve the understanding of geological processes through a variety of observation methods.
During the opening ceremony, four international cooperation activities were held simultaneously, including the launch of the collaborative research project of the China-Italy Deep Earth Science Joint Laboratory, the signing of the signing ceremony for the establishment of the Secretariat of the International Research Program on Four-Dimensional Topography of Asia (TopoAsia) at the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, the signing of the cooperation agreement between TopoAsia and the European Four-Dimensional Topography Evolution Project (TopoEurope), and the launch of the TopoAsia geological scientific expedition to Central Asia.
Special training and field geological investigations in the Beijing-Zhangjiakou area will also be arranged during the conference. Exchanges will be held around intracontinental deformation and syntectonic sedimentation in the Late Mesozoic "Yanshan Period". Academic reports, research method learning and observation of typical geological phenomena will be combined to provide opportunities for young scientific researchers to expand their research horizons, participate in international exchanges and establish cooperative ties.
This conference was guided by the China Geological Survey and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and hosted by the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, China University of Geosciences (Beijing), Chengdu University of Technology, Geological Society of China and Southern University of Science and Technology. Hou Zengqian and Wang Chengshan, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, co-chaired the scientific committee of the conference.
The overall arrangement of the conference is from November 6th to 12th, of which activities such as conference reports, scientific sub-venues and forums will be held from November 7th to 9th, and field geological surveys will be organized from November 10th to 11th. (over)
Researchers analyzed satellite data from 2002 to 2022 and found that color changes in parts of the Pacific Garbage Patch may be related to increased concentrations of microplastics. Satellite sensors can detect this cyan brightening, but direct measurement is needed to confirm it.

NASA is accepting applications for a new astronaut class to support the Artemis programme's goal of building a permanent lunar base. Officials announced the recruitment during a Kennedy Space Centre air show on Saturday. The last astronaut selection in 2025 drew over 8,000 applicants, with 10 chosen.

Nobel Prize winner in physics Stemer recently visited Tongji University to communicate with young teachers and students. He shared his own scientific research process, encouraged students to rely on persistence, love and responsibility to do basic research, and expressed his views on the application of artificial intelligence in scientific research.

The winners of the 25th Macronix Science Award were announced. Xu Yichen studied the behavior of cockroach phantom limbs, and Xu Guicheng and Tu Chenghao discussed the phototaxis movement of brine shrimp, both of whom won the gold medal. This competition attracted more than 800 teams from 168 schools to participate, demonstrating the innovative implementation capabilities of high school students in fields such as neuroscience, aquaculture and renewable energy.
