Iraq announces the dismantling of Al-Hawl camp and the return of most of the displaced

Undersecretary Karim Al-Nouri said, in a statement to the official agency, that Al-Hawl camp in northeastern Syria represented time bombs that could be detonated at any time, but Iraq succeeded in dismantling it, and only a few numbers remained there.

Al-Nouri added that the number of displaced Iraqis remaining in the camp is about 1,200 people, noting that 21,000 people were returned to their areas, and that no security violations were recorded in the areas to which they were returned.

He stressed that the lack of security violations recorded after the return of these displaced people confirms the success of their social and psychological rehabilitation, pointing out that the Al-Hawl camp file will be closed soon and completely.

Al-Hawl camp, located in Al-Hasakah Governorate in northeastern Syria, is one of the most prominent camps that shelter displaced people of different nationalities, including Iraqis and Syrians, in addition to families linked to ISIS members.

Over the past years, the camp has posed a security and humanitarian challenge, in light of the population density and difficult living conditions, while Iraq worked to return its citizens from the camp to the country in successive stages, and subject the returnees to security and rehabilitation programs before integrating them back into their areas.
