Xiamen University Intelligent Manufacturing College was established in Xiamen

Xiamen, September 6 (China News Service) – This year marks the 105th anniversary of the founding of Xiamen University and the 100th anniversary of the establishment of its mechanical engineering discipline. On September 6, the School of Intelligent Manufacturing at Xiamen University was officially established in Xiamen.

The school is established on the basis of the Sapehen Dong Institute of Micro- and Nanoscale Science and Technology and comprises the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, the Department of Scientific Instruments, and the Center for Engineering and Industrialization.

Hu Wenping, President of Xiamen University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, stated that the establishment of the School of Intelligent Manufacturing is a strategic decision made by the university with a forward-looking perspective and in response to major trends. It represents not only a systematic restructuring and transformation of disciplines but also a crucial step in proactively serving national strategies and advancing the development of new engineering disciplines.

Chen Jiageng, a patriotic overseas Chinese leader and founder of Xiamen University, planned and laid out mechanical engineering under the engineering category at the time of the university’s founding. In 1926, Xiamen University established the Department of Mechanical Engineering; in 1940, Sa Ben-dong, then president of Xiamen University, founded the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering amidst the turmoil of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Over the past century, Xiamen University’s mechanical engineering discipline has consistently resonated with the drive for scientific and technological self-reliance.

At the school’s inauguration ceremony, Sa Wenyi, the eldest granddaughter of Sa Ben-dong, expressed that if her grandfather could see his name associated with the disciplines of mechanical engineering and scientific instruments, as well as the School of Intelligent Manufacturing, moving into the future, he would surely feel deeply gratified.

The school has established a Discipline Development Advisory Committee, appointing 19 members, including 10 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Jiang Zhuangde, chairman of the committee, stated that the establishment of the school represents a transformation and upgrade following a century of disciplinary accumulation, a strategic layout to seize the commanding heights of future development, and will contribute more Xiamen University wisdom to China’s intelligent manufacturing industry.

Zhou Wei, dean of the school, delivered a report on the school’s development. He proposed that the school will aim for the goal of building a world-class mechanical engineering discipline, systematically advancing four major initiatives: building peaks in talent, tackling key scientific research challenges, fostering excellence in education, and achieving strategic synergy, thereby creating an internationally leading base for cultivating intelligent manufacturing talents and driving scientific and technological innovation.
