Two women die and two babies are injured by a flood in León

At least two women have died and two babies have suffered minor injuries when they were inside a warehouse in the town of Manzanedo de Valdueza, near Ponferrada (León), which was flooded by the flood of water and mud formed by an intense storm.

Sources from the Government Subdelegation in León and municipal authorities have explained to EFE that the effects of the strong waterspout have also been noticed in the nearby town of Bouzas, where several vehicles have been swept away by the flood, in this case without personal injury.

Although the initial information from the 1-1-2 Emergency Service spoke of several missing and injured people, finally, after locating the bodies of these two women, aged 60 and 80, the Subdelegation has confirmed that there are no longer missing people in the area.

As has happened in other parts of Castilla y León, on alert due to storms, a strong waterspout has discharged this afternoon over El Bierzo, which has caused the landslide that has affected the towns of Manzanedo de Valdueza and Bouzas, which crosses the Oza river.

In the case of Manzanedo, the water and mud have been channeled through Iglesia Street and filled a warehouse in which six people were at that time.

The president of the Bierzo Regional Council, Olegario Ramón, has traveled to both towns and has confirmed to EFE that they are experiencing difficulties in road access, cut off as a result of the landslide and mud.

Ramón has acknowledged that there is "great concern" about what happened, which he has linked in part to the situation of the land affected by the serious fires last year, without the necessary vegetation for the land to be supported.

National Police officers are already deployed in the area while the emergency services continue working and the evolution of the storm and the damage caused in other population centers affected by the strong waterspout are being monitored.

Several calls have reported the situation shortly before seven thirty in the afternoon, so the Ponferrada Firefighters, the National Police, the Local Police of Ponferrada, the Emergency Coordination Center of the Government of Castilla y León and the Psychological Intervention Group in Disasters and Emergencies (Gripde) have been mobilized.
