It's a #FAKE photo of voters with electronic ankle bracelets and red clothes queuing up to vote in the election; image was made with AI

Quick Look

An image circulating on social media showing people dressed in red with electronic anklets in a voting line is false and was generated by artificial intelligence, as verified by Fact or Fake using an OpenAI detector, which identified signs of syntheticity such as SynthID and typical AI distortions.

A photo is circulating on social media that supposedly shows people wearing electronic ankle bracelets and red clothes while waiting in a voting line in this Sunday's elections (4). It's #FAKE.

Fake Stamp (Horizontal) — Photo: g1

🔴 What does the photo look like?

Published on X and Threads, the image shows three people dressed in red in a voting line, two adults wearing electronic ankle bracelets and a child wearing a t-shirt printed with the number 13. "It captures the voters' view", says the text box superimposed on the photo.

A post by X, which reached more than 1.5 million views, says: "Weakest PT members."

Although the material received a note from the community saying that "The image is demonstrably altered by artificial intelligence", in the comments section there are messages from people who believed in the veracity of the scene. See two examples: "Poor child"; and "The image speaks for itself, look at the level".

⚠️ Why is it #FAKE?

Fato ou Fake submitted the photo to the artificial intelligence detector from OpenAI, owner of ChatGPT, which can identify images created with the company's own AI tools. See the scan result (and the infographic below): "Generated using OpenAI tools. The signals below provide evidence supporting this result: SynthID detected. Content credentials not detected."

SynthID is a technology that inserts a watermark to identify synthetic content. This type of stamp is incorporated into photos manufactured with AI. Although imperceptible to humans, the technique is detectable by the system.

The second note ("We did not find a reliable C2PA manifesto from OpenAI") is a reference to the acronym for "Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity".

Created by a non-profit organization in the United States, the project establishes global technical standards for content origination.

The companies that are part of the initiative, including OpenAI itself, provide a kind of "birth certificate", or signature. This works as a tag to track digital files (images, videos, audios and texts).

➡️ Fato ou Fake also identified common distortions in AI productions in the photo. Detecting these changes requires closer observation and may go unnoticed in social media feeds. See details below:

One of the "voters" has deformed hands (it's as if one of his fingers is half broken).

The prints on the child's t-shirt are distorted and lack definition, a common feature in images generated with AI.
