Celebrating the centenary of the birth of Fidel Castro and studying his archives in Russia

This year, Cubans are celebrating the centenary of the birth of Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz, or Fidel as he preferred to be called.

Some consider him to be that Commandant leader, the last knight of socialism, the man who challenged the most powerful empire in the world and most importantly, he persevered. Others consider him a dictator who built one of the most effective repressive regimes in Latin America, but all agreed that he was an exceptional figure. In Russia, the head of the Fidel Castro Foundation, Leonid Savin, has been working for many years to study unique archives that contain biographical materials about Castro and his works, and also collect memories of his comrades and friends close to him. Today Leonid Savin reveals unknown pages in the life of the Cuban leader and those that are not usually highlighted.
