When I met Tian Zefen at the Comprehensive Cultural Service Center in Longquan Village, Xinxiang County, Xinxiang City, Henan Province, she was playing clappers and performing excerpts from the Henan Opera "Peach Blossom Temple" with fellow villagers.

45 years ago, 25-year-old Tian Zefen married to Longquan Village and has been living here ever since. She witnessed the construction of factories in the village and moved into more comfortable mass housing.

There are more than 4,000 villagers in Longquan Village. At present, neatly planned village villas and residential units have been built, as well as lifestyle supermarkets, village clinics, cultural and sports plazas, senior activity centers, express delivery outlets, etc., so that villagers can meet their needs for firewood, rice, oil and salt, schooling and employment, shopping and entertainment, medical care and elderly care within 5 minutes. At the same time, Longquan Village also provides a number of welfare guarantees for villagers, including an annual pension of 1,000 yuan (RMB, the same below) for those over 65 years old, and students in the village studying at Longquan Education Center are free of tuition and accommodation fees.

The diverse welfare guarantees benefit from the growing village collective economy. Longquan Village has innovated the "one village, multiple products" development model. More than 30 companies have settled in the village, and they have created agricultural specialty brands such as "Golden Pear" and "Longqingquan Wine". In 2025, the collective income of Longquan Village will reach 12.6 million yuan.

From the initial construction of brick kilns and flour mills to the development of paper mills, chemical plants, and pharmaceutical plants today, Longquan Village Party Committee Secretary Song Yunzhong said frankly that he is still exploring the transformation of the village's collective economy: he is considering the development of high technology and has also begun to investigate aramid paper production projects. This new high-performance fiber material is widely used in electric power, aerospace, rail transportation, new energy, electronic communications and other fields, and is one of the key new materials to improve equipment capabilities.

"Happiness" is how Tian Zefen evaluates his life in Longquan Village. For Wang Defeng, deputy director of the Propaganda Department of the Xinxiang County Party Committee, this is what he hopes to achieve for more people: "The improvement of happiness has the greatest impact on people."

Wang Defeng believes that rural areas now have their own unique appeal. He said that many young people have a hard time working in cities, but when they return to the villages where they were born, they will find that there are jobs nearby. "Although the income may be lower than in the city, combined with the improvement of the living environment and the rich cultural supply, he (she) feels happier than (living) in the city." (End)
