A 33-year-old Hualien man surnamed Li, who is a member of the Unification Promotion Party, broke into the Dongdamen Night Market in Hualien with a knife last night, scaring tourists and fleeing in panic. Prosecutors suspected that he might have abetted accomplices, and applied to the Hualien District Court tonight for permission to be detained on suspicion of attempted murder and other crimes.

The Hualien District Prosecutor’s Office pointed out that after being interrogated by the prosecutor, the defendant, a man named Li, pleaded guilty to committing crimes such as intimidation of the public in Article 151 of the Criminal Law, attempted murder in Article 271, Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 1, and intimidation in Article 305 of the Criminal Law. If there are enough facts to prove that he is in danger of fleeing and committing the same crime repeatedly, and the attempted murder involved is a felony with the minimum penalty of more than 5 years in prison, there is a reason and necessity for detention, so he applies to the Hualien District Court for detention.

The Hualien District Court held a detention court at 8 p.m. and ruled that Li Nan be detained at around 9 p.m.

The prosecutor pointed out that yesterday (8th) evening, they received a notification from the Hualien Branch of the Hualien County Police Department that a man was suspected of slashing at passers-by with a knife at the Dongdamen Night Market, causing a foreign woman's hair to be chopped off.

Hualien District Prosecutor's Office Chief Prosecutor Chen Shuyi immediately ordered the activation of the "Response Mechanism to Prevent Attacks Endangering the Public" and assigned Prosecutor Huang Lanya to form a task force to investigate. After the police quickly arrived at the scene, they found Li Nan in the parking lot of Dongdaemun Night Market. They immediately arrested him and seized a watermelon knife used in crimes.
