Ge Junbo, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was elected president-elect of the World Heart Federation

According to news from Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University on the 10th, at the 2026 World Congress of Cardiology held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the 10th, Beijing time, Ge Junbo, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the Department of Cardiology at Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, was elected president-elect of the World Heart Federation for a term from 2027 to 2028.

Ge Junbo said that in the future, he will focus on prevention and grassroots capacity building, with special attention to community and county treatment networks in low- and middle-income countries, so as to transform heart health from a common vision to a global action.

This is the first time in the field of global cardiovascular health that a mainland Chinese scholar has held a core governance position in the organization, marking the formal and in-depth integration of China's cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment experience and China's medical solutions into the global health governance system. According to the World Heart Federation, the president-elect will enter a transition period in accordance with the alliance's charter and work with global members to promote the inclusion of cardiovascular health equity issues in more national policy agendas.

The World Heart Federation is an influential international organization in the field of global cardiovascular health and the only organization in the field of global cardiovascular disease that maintains formal relations with the World Health Organization. Its membership network covers more than 100 countries and connects more than 200 cardiology associations, heart foundations and related organizations. It has long been committed to promoting the prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases and reducing the global burden of heart disease and stroke.

In the next step, Ge Junbo will focus on promoting five aspects of work: promoting high-quality cardiovascular medical services that are not limited by differences in national, regional and economic conditions; promoting affordable and replicable first aid systems such as chest pain centers to allow more emergency patients to receive timely treatment; through international training and specialist training , to help countries with limited resources build a sustainable local cardiovascular talent team; strengthen cooperation based on the actual conditions of Asia-Pacific, Africa, Latin America and other regions to promote localized prevention and treatment plans; promote the transnational sharing of guidelines, scientific research, technology and education results, and transform innovation into health output that can reach the grassroots.
