The stay of the execution is the result of the actions of Pike's defenders, who for years have been raising arguments about her difficult childhood, sexual violence and mental problems. Christa Pike was sentenced to death for the brutal murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in 1995. The two women knew each other from the Knoxville training center. According to the prosecutor's office, the motive for the crime was jealousy for the boy.

Pike, together with her partner Tadaryl Shipp, lured Slemmer to a secluded place, where a cruel murder took place. Slemmer was beaten and tortured. A carved pentagram was discovered on the victim's body, which caused a media storm and speculation about the ritual nature of the crime.

Pike explained that she acted out of passion, accusing Slemmer of trying to steal her boyfriend. However, witnesses testified that Pike bragged about the crime and showed a fragment of the victim's skull.

Shipp was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

If the execution goes through, Pike would be the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.
