First Lady Erdoğan Spoke on Children's Digital Safety at the UN

The event, under the auspices of First Lady Erdoğan, was organized at the UN Headquarters in cooperation with the Ministry of Family and Social Services, UNICEF and the Office of the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative on Violence Against Children.

Erdoğan, who welcomed the leaders' spouses participating in the program and chatted with them, expressed his great pleasure in taking the first step of a path that they will take together with the UN for the well-being of children. "Today, children have been turned into a target audience whose minds and attention are taken care of and reduced to a user profile," said Erdogan, and pointed out that screen exposure leads to consequences such as "a decrease in the use of psychiatric drugs by the age of 5, addictive behaviors and biological damage associated with screen use in the child's brain."

Stating that we cannot stand by and watch technology invent a new type of human being to serve its own purposes, Erdoğan said, "We are also aware that the huge algorithm architecture we face cannot be combated with measures such as more digital literacy or parental control. We cannot reduce limiting screen time to a simple matter of will. The responsibility of ensuring the safety of the child belongs to all of us, not just the parents. We must establish a healthy digital ecosystem and ensure that security is the starting point of design, not a feature added to digital systems later."
